Title: Error 5 in SCManager on Windows Server 2008
Post by: William Fischer on January 19, 2012, 05:16:41 PM
I have just installed Newt Pro (2.5.216) on a Windows 7 machine and when trying to gather information on 2 servers with Windows Server 2008, I get the following error:

Low-Level could not install service on "SERVER_NAME", error 5 while opening SCManager:  (Access is denied.) trying again...

This particular server has R2 installed, but the other is only Server 2008.  Server 2003 and all Windows XP, Vista and 7 computers scan fine.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there.  It may be better to handle this through email right now.  Partly because it's uncommon, but also because we don't yet have a solution that works in every case.  We're dedicated to nailing this down though.  We'll email you soon with the address we have for you.

Hi William,

Have you resolved your Server 2008 problem.
I am suffering with the same issue.
I have one Userid that works and one that doesn't!!!!!
As a worldwide organisation our "admin" accounst are all about to change as part of a security exercise.
I am concerned that i will end up with scanning accounts that will just not work.

Regards
Jim Warren

This has been an issue we've been trying to find a solution to for some time.  The problem is that only about 4 users (including you) have contacted us about it and many haven't had the time to help figure out why this is happening or simply haven't responded.

Newt requires at minimum read/write access to the ADMIN$ share (\\PCName\ADMIN$), but it also requires the ability to remotely start & stop services.  In 99% of cases, if one as administrator (ADMIN$) access, they also have rights to remotely control services.  It's only in this particular case with roughly 4 users where we've seen an inconsistency.  In reality, this is a Microsoft security issue, except that it affects Newt and other remote administration software like ours.  We're not sure if this is a bug in Windows 2008 Server or if it's intentional, but we're willing to work with you as long as it takes to find a solution to this issue.

Are you 100% sure that both of these accounts have the same exact rights?  If so, I'm leaning more toward a bug in Windows 2008 itself.

Hi, I just bought the 2.5 version and I have the same problem as mentionned above plus this:

Low-Level could not install service on computername, error 5 while opening SCManager:  (Acces denied.) trying again...
Can't access 'SysWOW64' or 'System32' folders in \\computername\ADMIN$

I have Windows server 2008 R2 64

And with the same credential, I can access \\computername\ADMIN$

Hi and thank you for your purchase.  We do apologize for this issue and really want to find a solution.  We're not sure it will be the same solution for everyone, but we hope it is.

Could you do us a favor and access the server's ADMIN$ share again, then right afterward, open a DOS Prompt and issue the following command?  From the same PC you're scanning *from* of course.

sc \\servername query

If you get an error, please paste that here.  We just want to confirm that Windows is giving the same error when trying to access services on the remote PC (server).

Also, we changed your username to simply "btherrien" since you had set your username to your email address.  Otherwise you'd get a ton of spam from email crawlers.  You should have gotten an email with the new username.  A new password had to be generated, but feel free to change it back to what you want.

It appears the issue here appears to have been credentials.  When entering domain credentials, please use the "domain\username" format for the username.  This tells NEWT this to assume this is a domain credential.

We'll be adding a note in the interface about this on the next build update.
