Title: KeePass Password Safe (false alarm)
Post by: BigJohnDoe on March 13, 2013, 05:11:39 PM
The open source password manager, KeePass by Dominik Reichl, is not being found on a consistent basis by Newt Pro (latest build). Newt repeatedly finds KeePass on Windows XP workstations but this is not the case with Windows 7 Pro SP1, at least in my domain environment. Newt finds some of the Win 7 workstations but not all.
Has anyone else run into this?
One thing I noticed in XP is that KeePass creates a HKLM\Software record in the registry. In Windows 7 the data file .KDBX is associated with the KeePass.exe but appears as this key value "1aae7d95d" in the HKLM/Software section.

Hi, and thank you very much for posting about this.

We should be getting the information for installed software from the same location as Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features) in the Windows Control Panel.  We've worked pretty hard to match this list as close as possible.  If you're seeing any software in the Control Panel but not in NEWT Pro, please definitely contact us.

Now we just did a test here with Windows 7 and it found KeePass just fine, but it's possible something about a few of your systems may be different from ours.

If you're interested, this where we get installed apps:

On a 32-bit system, for 32-bit apps, it's:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

On a 64-bit system, for 64-bit apps, it's:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
On a 64-bit system, for 32-bit apps, it's:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

If you'd like, you could export those locations as .reg files, Zip/RAR/7zip them, then email (http://www.komodolabs.com/contactus.shtml) the archive to our support department.

We'll look through them and see what we might have done wrong, then if needed we can import those into a fresh Windows install and get it fixed for you.

Okay, I'm checking the registry keys on Windows 7 computers with KeePass that Newt found and didn't find. I'll get back to you as soon as I have that information.

Just so everyone knows, we received an email back from BigJohnDoe and it appears this is a false alarm and there is currently no issue we know of where NEWT Pro isn't picking up everything in the Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features) of a Windows machine.
