Sure, we tried to give a little explanation in Preferences, but it\'s certainly not enough. We apologize too that we\'re still working on the manual for 2.5, so the manual you do have is unfortunately for 2.0.
This feature/option is there to basically give the user control over the remote files. Some users want a zero footprint and no files left on the remote machines, even though NEWT will need to copy the files again for the next scan. Even then, it\'s much faster than 2.0 and faster than most competing products. Leaving the client files on the remote machine, of course, makes subsequent scans much faster because the files are already there.
The length of days you leave the client files on the remote machines is purely a user preference. It works similar to a screensaver, in that every time you scan a particular machine, a new date & time is saved on that machine which is exactly the number of days you have specified into the future. So if you were to set it to 3 days, the client files would be removed from that machine, by that machine, automatically. No matter if that computer is connected to a network or not. If the machine is shut down and turned on later, if the saved date is past due, removal will happen immediately, leaving the computer completely free of all client files. If instead you scan that remote computer every 2 days, the client files would never be removed because a new date will always be saved that is 3 days into the future.
So basically if you\'re not concerned about leaving client files on your machines, you can set it to some very safe distance in the future. Let\'s say if you usually perform scans at least once a week. There is no difference in setting it to 30 days, as setting it to 120 (or even 365), except that, if any one of those machines were removed from the network or were otherwise not scanned, it would take that many days starting when you scanned last, until the files are removed by that machine automatically. If you notice NEWT copying files more often than you\'d like, simply increase the number of days. It can even be 1,000 if you wish, but not necessary.
The following files are copied to or created on the remote machine:
NEWTScannerSvc.exe - The main service which is always running, waiting for a scan or to auto-remove itself.
NEWTScannerCOM.exe - Service component
NEWTScan.exe - Main scan engine
NEWT.dll - Scan engine component
NEWTVer.txt - A kind of configuration file. This also includes the date & time for the service to be automatically removed.
The total bandwidth for each copy is about 500K per machine, with a footprint of 768K after decompression.
Also, when new versions of NEWT are released and you install the main app. on your system, the client files will be automatically updated (if needed) upon scanning. No user intervention or installation is required.
This is probably more information than you expected, but we hope it gives you a better idea of how the new version works. It\'s a drastic change from 2.0, but it\'s also a drastic improvement in speed, reliability and bandwidth usage.
