Windows XP sp 2 firewall
« on: December 01, 2004, 01:25:41 PM »
Hello,
I am trying to get NewtPro to work in conjunction with Windows XP sp2’s Firewall.  I am operating in a domain environment.  I have installed NewtPro on workstation 1, firewall turned off.  I scan workstation 2 with XP firewall off and everything works.  I turn on firewall and the scan fails (as expected).  Through Group Policy, I allow file and print sharing and remote administration to pass through the firewall (which also enables ICMP echo) and still do not find the machine.  Is there another service or port number that I need to open to allow NewtPro to scan a machine?

Hello, yes, there are ports you'll need to open.

If you do decide to leave the firewalls on, you should be able to open ports 135-139 (NetBIOS and Microsoft Directory Services), port 445 (RPC).

Please let us know if this helps.

I had ports 135, 139, and 445 open.  I have opened 136,137, and 138.  Also ICMP Echo request is turned on.  I was scanning by typing in the IP number of the machine in the scan panel.  Looking closer I now notice that the machine is not being discovered.

This sounds like a very uncommon problem.  We will contact you by email to help get this resolved.
