Software Product Key Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Incorrect
« on: March 02, 2011, 08:59:24 PM »
It appears NEWT Pro cannot get correct Product Key for Microsoft SQL Server 2000 under Software Tab. it displayed the same value as the Product ID.

But it seems to get the correct keys for other Microsoft products like Office Professional 2003.
We would really like to NEWT Pro for our software licensing audit, but unfortunately it only seems to be able to get only a few product keys.

Are there plans to improve on this feature?
Thanks for looking into this.

Software Product Key Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Incorrect

Hello there!  SQL Server 2000, as well as all Office 2000 products, don't store the license key, so there is no product available that can detect keys for those.  During the install, they check that your key is ok at installation and then toss it.  However starting with Office 2003, they do store the license key and even Office 2010 is detectable.

In the future we plan to add other standard key detection, such as Adobe products, but other than Microsoft, Adobe and maybe Autodesk/AutoCAD, there are no real standard methods to detect license keys.

We'd love to add detection of other software keys, but probably 80% of software apps don't store their key a detectable way, or as in the case of SQL Server/Office 2000, they're not stored at all.
