Cannot scan Windows 10 workgroup PCs
« on: April 20, 2016, 12:43:35 PM »
I am unable to use Newt to scan Windows 10 PCs that are in a workgroup. I can see they have the ADMIN$ share, but I cannot browse to the computers through the network. I am getting Error 5 when trying to launch the scan. Is there a universal tweak to make for scanning W10 PCs in a workgroup? Please advise, I am stuck.

Hi, I can try and help with this.  By default, Windows 10 (and 7) is locked down by default on workgroups.  I assume you're saying you're not even able to browse them from Windows Explorer, correct?  If so, the only fix is to add a value to the registry on each Win10 machine.  That only needs done once, but it's not very convenient, especially on a customer's network.

To allow full scanning with Win10 (including Home edition) on a workgroup, add a DWORD32 key called LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System and set it to 1.  Then reboot.  Then the ADMIN$ share and the PCs themselves should be available.

You may want to look at our new network discovery software called Slitheris.  It doesn't deep scan Windows machines, but it does use advanced methods to detect some key info from them other tools can't.  It's very handy for MSPs visiting disparate networks.
