Computer Off? (No ping returned)
« on: February 19, 2007, 01:35:41 PM »
Have two laptop computers configured the same.  One scans just fine and the other shows Computer off.  That computer is powered on, is connected to the network.  Both have XPSP2 and the firewall settings are the same.   Can ping the  laptop from the command line, just not inside NEWT.

Hi Don, are you able to ping that laptop from DOS, both by computer name and IP address?

Do you have \"Use IP Address\" for scanning under Preferences?

Modified preferences to use IP and the system can be found sometimes.  Still did not always respond to ping.  So I unchecked the ping response preference.

When I discover the systems however, all systems are found.  Is this by name of by IP?

Do you have the Ping Timeout and Ping Count settings the same for both scanning and IP Discovery?  These are separate settings.  The Scan timeouts can be changed under Preferences and IP Discovery settings under the Discover panel.

Both are set to a default of 1 second (1000 ms) and 3 Ping Counts (or attempts).

IP Discovery works in reverse of Scanning in that it pings a range of IPs, then detects the computer\'s name.  Scanning, by default, uses the computer name since IP addresses often change, but computer names rarely do.

Can you ping the problem laptop by its computer name in a DOS Command Prompt?  Not just by IP address.
